O presente ensaio propõe analisar o futebol, em suas mais diferentes expressões, enquanto uma manifestação de lazer da população brasileira. Para tanto recorremos a uma breve análise do contexto histórico da inserção do futebol no Brasil; como ele passou a ser visto como um “patrimônio nacional”; as influências exercidas pelo futebol contemporâneo neste entendimento; o futebol de várzea como uma demonstração da apropriação do esporte pela população e como o processo de “patrimonialização” dos campos de várzea pode significar a sobrevivência dessa prática de lazer.
This article proposes to analyze football, in its most different expressions, as a leisure manifestation of the Brazilian population. In order to do so, we resort to a brief analysis of the historical context of the insertion of football in Brazil; how it came to be seen as a “national heritage”; the influences exerted by contemporary football in this understanding; community football as a demonstration of the population's appropriation of the sport and how the process of “patrimonialization” of popular fields can mean the survival of this leisure practice.
