Associated aspects to the age at sexual initiation among adolescents from Sao Paulo city: a quantitative study

Using survival analysis, we analyzed data from 363 both female and male 15 to 19 year-old adolescents enrolled in a family health unit in the east area of São Paulo city. They filled a self-administered structured questionnaire at home in May 2007. Results showed a statistical difference in the age of sexual initiation between women and men (15,2 and 14,3 years of age, respectively). Sexual life onset showed to be an event that does not occur in a linear way during adolescence, but a gradual phenomenon that takes place from a specific age. Multiple Cox regression showed that variables associated to the age at sexual initiation among women were working as well as relating a non-rigid mother concerning to dating. Variable associated to the age at sexual initiation among men was agreeing to the sentence man can have sex no matter what because cant become pregnant. It was concluded that cultural, relational and demographical aspects can influence sexual initiation among adolescents.
Por meio da abordagem da análise de sobrevida, foi analisada a idade de iniciação sexual de 363 homens e mulheres adolescentes, moradores da área de abrangência de uma unidade de saúde da família da zona oeste da cidade de São Paulo. O questionário estruturado foi auto-preenchido em maio de 2007. Os resultados mostraram uma diferença estatisticamente significativa na idade de iniciação sexual entre homens e mulheres (14,3 e 15,2 anos de idade, respectivamente). A iniciação sexual mostrou-se como um evento que não ocorre uniformemente na adolescência, mas sim de forma gradual, como um processo que ganha dimensão ao longo deste período. A análise múltipla segundo Cox revelou que, entre as mulheres, trabalhar e referir a mãe como tendo um perfil meio-termo em relação a saídas e namoro foram inversamente associadas à idade de iniciação sexual. Entre os homens, concordar com a frase homem pode transar quando bem entender, pois não engravida foi positivamente associado à idade de iniciação sexual. Conclui-se que aspectos culturais, relacionais e demográficos têm influência na iniciação sexual de adolescentes.
