In the fall 1991 issue of the International Forum for Logotherapy, Stephen S. Kalmar, in a letter to the editor, made a plea for social conscience. He writes ôI believe that the concept to social conscience express the quintessence of Logotherapy. A person without a properly developed social conscience cannot lead a meaningful life. Three basic ethical virtues/principles: integrity, civility and the wisdom of love are useful principles in helping to form the basis for developing a social conscience. These principles are inherent in Logotherapy. In this paper I will describe the concept of social conscience in terms of premise of a whole-authentic person is grounded in social conscience. Stephen's challenge was appropriately summarized with the wisdom that Logotherapists should recognize the importance of the development of social conscience in early childhood by helping the person to select social values for a positive social attitude.
