The consequences of violence in the family can be observed in various forms, among which, getting ill, as an expression of the impossibility of speaking up and reacting against the violence suffered. Some heart disease are revealing of the organ's vulnerability to the shock caused by strong emotion. In Maceio, we carried out a research with seventy-five women; twenty five of who had been submitted to surgery to revascularization the myocardium; thirty of them suffered from high blood-pressure and twenty belonged to a group with to such problems. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the stressing life events and the quality of the strategies used by these women to cope with stress, and to relate it to the development of illnesses. Describing the stressing events in their lives, these women denounced several kinds of episodes of violence in the domestic environment caused either by their specific situation in life or by family relationships.
