A descriptive study, of qualitative nature developed with the purpose of pointing the aspects of domestic violence in a study on child rearing by families of three generations. Data was obtained through interviews with open questions. It was applied to 25 families represented by women, being six great grandmothers, six grandmothers, twelve mothers and two fathers. In the first generation (great-grandmothers) it was found: a distant relationship between parents and children; submission and fear of the woman to go against husband's opinion or to take initiatives without consulting him previously; great demand that the children might correspond to the expected behaviors which was obtained through spanking for any reason. On the second generation, spanking was still a discipline resource frequently used by mothers, on a tentative to maintain the domestic order. In the third generation it was observed an inversion of values, that is, spanking is not part of parents' routine. They seem to have lost the control of the situation. For instance, the fact that they are not able to make their children to eat properly represents a form of violence against children's health. There is also a kind of aggression from children upon parents, who have almost no family rights (on family trips, choice of TV channel, best place in the sofa, and others) being the decisions almost always taken in the children's interest or under their influence.
