O aleitamento materno é a forma mais saudável de alimentar um lactente, trazendo incontestáveis benefícios para a criança, mãe, família, ambiente e sociedade. A participação do pai ao longo da gravidez através do acompanhamento da mãe, e o suporte oferecido após o nascimento do bebé pode influenciar positivamente o sucesso do aleitamento materno pelo apoio e segurança oferecidos, contribuindo ainda para a satisfação do casal. Objetivos:
Analisar a importância atribuída pelo pai à sua participação no Aleitamento Materno; Identificar qual o tipo de participação (física, doméstica ou afetiva) a que atribui maior importância; Identificar alguns fatores que possam relacionar-se com a importância atribuída pelo pai à sua participação no Aleitamento Materno. Métodos:
Realizou-se um estudo quantitativo, descritivo-correlacional. Os dados foram recolhidos através de questionário, aplicado a 83 pais de recém-nascidos em aleitamento materno, internados na Obstetrícia ou Neonatologia do Centro Hospitalar Cova da Beira. Resultados:
Verificou-se que 43,4% dos participantes tinham entre 31-36 anos; 33,7% concluíram o 12º ano; 44,6% com relação conjugal entre 1-5 anos; 66,3% casados; 54,2% sem filhos anteriores; 54,2% das mães frequentaram aulas de preparação para o parto e 40,0% dos pais acompanharam-nas às vezes. Os resultados indicam grau elevado de Envolvimento do pai na gravidez, Conhecimento e Necessidade de conhecimento sobre aleitamento materno. Verificou-se que o pai atribuiu um grau de importância elevado à sua participação no aleitamento materno em qualquer uma das dimensões. Não foram identificados fatores relacionados com a importância atribuída pelo pai à sua participação no aleitamento materno (p>0,05). Conclusões:
O estudo revela que os pais atribuem grande importância à sua participação no aleitamento materno, o que nem sempre é tido em consideração na conduta atual. Suscita a necessidade de alterar procedimentos, promovendo a participação mais ativa do pai no processo de aleitamento materno, contribuindo assim para o sucesso desta prática.

Breastfeeding is the healthiest way to feed infants, bringing undoubted benefits for the child, mother, family, environment and society. The participation of the father during pregnancy by monitoring the mother and the support offered after the birth of the baby can positively influence the success of breastfeeding support and security offered, still contributing to the satisfaction of the couple. Objectives:
Analyze the importance given by the father to his participation in Breastfeeding; Identify what type of participation (physical, emotional or domestic) that assigns greater importance; Identify same factors that may relate to the importance given by the father to his participation in Breastfeeding. Methods:
We conducted a quantitative, descriptive correlational study. Data collected through questionnaire administered to 83 parents of newborns breastfeeding, admitted in Obstetrics and Neonatology of the Centro Hospitalar Cova da Beira. Results:
43.4% of participants were between 31-36 years; 33,7% completed the 12th grade; 44.6% were married relationship between 1-5 years; 66.3% married; 54,2% without previous children; 54.2% of mothers attended classes in preparation for childbirth and 40.0% of parents accompanied them sometimes. The results indicate a high degree of involvement of the father in pregnancy, Knowledge and Necessity of knowledge about breastfeeding. It appears that the father gave a high degree of importance to their participation in Breastfeeding in any one dimension. No factors were identified with the importance attributed by the parent to its participation in Breastfeeding (p> 0.05). Conclusions:
The study shows that parents attach great importance to its participation in Breastfeeding, which is not always taken into account in the current conduct. This highlights the need to change procedures, promoting more active parent involvement in the breastfeeding process, thus contributing to the success of this practice.
